At first, only consider keywords with smaller or mid-sized volumes because those tend to be less difficult to rank for, unless, you find some with a bigger volume, that’s also relevant, and surprisingly, has a lower keyword difficulty. Those are your golden tickets to SEO.
Through those keywords, you can target a bigger audience and have a solid chance to rank well for it, because the lower difficulty also signals that there aren’t too many competitors in the topic.
Other than that, once the site strengthens and has a stronger number of monthly visitors, you can start looking around among the big-volume keywords, too.
What is a big keyword volume? There isn’t one ultimate answer to this one. I’d say that anything above 100 searches per month is worth a shot, and then from there, the sky’s the limit. With that said, maybe a keyword with 70 searches per month will bring you paying customers because it’s highly relevant. Never be afraid of testing things, especially in SEO. You’ll see keywords in the thousand ranges as well, but as discussed, it’ll take time before you should go for a keyword with a 1.5K monthly search volume. However, to be honest, that day may never come since those types of volumes are more typical in certain industries, such as tech, marketing, or healthcare, with bigger competition. This is the other characteristic of keyword volume: what we consider as high or low volume varies from industry to industry, depending on the number of competitors. |
