Story of the week 🗞️
I look at many creator websites, and believe it or not, I more or less go through the same checklist as I would with the website of a company or a brand to see if it's set up well.
Most creators, understandably, perfectly nail the visual appearance of their website, so let me share some tips that are more technical or marketing-related that you might not think of and can be helpful for improvement in this area.
Checklist for your creator website 💻
- Is the loading time of the website quick?
Both on the homepage and the subpages? A good loading time should be around a couple of seconds.
👉 Use this free Google tool to check your site's loading time. If your First Contentful Paint (FCP) and Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) are both under 2.5 seconds, you're good.
- Does the website work on different devices and screen sizes (especially mobile)?
The majority of visitors will come from a mobile device, and you cannot waste their time (and lose potential sales) by having a site that is not optimised for that experience. With that said, the site should work on most devices, so ultimately, it's best to have a sort of "omnichannel" approach here, providing a seamless user experience in every version of your site if possible.
- Does the homepage tell me exactly what this site is about?
What is the purpose of this site? What can I do here as a visitor or potential customer? Is it immediately clear what you offer for purchase? Do you have ready-made objects I can buy, or do you offer commissions? Or both? Do you have a sale going on that I should know about and that would make me more likely to purchase something? Think about what you want visitors to do once they're here and make sure that message comes across immediately.
- Does the website give the same vibes as other assets of your communication?
For instance, if I came here from your Instagram, would I find the same aesthetics, from the colours you use to the type of imagery you have? Do you have the same tone of voice here as on the other platforms you use? Do I feel like the same person "talks" to me here? Make sure to be consistent and "brand fit" in these areas to help people remember you.
- Is the site easy to navigate?
Your menu should be crystal clear with unequivocal category names and a navigation panel that is easy to use. Help people look around and buy from you by providing a site that is easy to "click around".
- Does every link work on the site?
It's infuriating when somebody clicks on a menu item or a link placed in a piece of text, and the page that opens doesn't exist, or it leads the visitor to the wrong page. And it could be the reason why you lose a sale, too. Remember how I said that a site should load in a few seconds? This is similar to it. People really don't like to wait around and definitely don't like to jump through extra hoops. Review every link you place or embed on your site and avoid these unnecessary mishaps.
