Story of the week 🗞️
Marketers love to talk about the importance of having a website & webshop that is optimised for search. I do it, too.
Although AI mode has arrived to search, setting up some new rules for SEO, the good news for creators is that, for now, it has a bigger impact on informational pages (like blog posts) than on commercial pages (like your webshop pages). I could go into detail about that, but for now,
I want to assure you that optimising your webshop pages for search as a creator still matters and still brings results (bringing visitors and potential customers to your site)—if you do it right.
Let’s see an example of a creator webshop that is optimised for search and 2 simple & effective SEO tricks you can copy from it.
The example is from ceramicist Kness. One of her main keywords (and selling points) is "ceramic animals". Guess where she ranks for that on Google? On page 1, position 3, after shopping results and a Pinterest link. That's huge for an independent artist website! She's even higher than Etsy's related category page, which is unheard of, if you ask me.
Now, let's see the tricks! 👇
1. Home page includes the main keywords she wants to appear for in search when people type those in Google: cutest ceramic, collectible, porcelain figurines, cute functional pottery, charming animal figurines, porcelain jewelry, adorable animal necklaces, handmade Canadian pottery
In our free SEO for creators course, I talk about this search mindset. You need to think like your potential customers. Kness has a figurine called “Backpack bunny”. People won’t search for that because they don’t yet know about the existence of such a product. They’ll search for porcelain figurines, handmade pottery, or perhaps Canadian pottery, because that is where their "shopping mindset" is at. Then Kness’s site will appear, and they will encounter that bunny and a bunch of others.
2. Clear product categories with keyword-optimised descriptions. Here are two of her product categories (also menu items) with related keywords highlighted:
- Ceramic figurines category: ceramic figurine, porcelain figurine, ceramic animals
- Ceramic jewelry category: ceramic jewelry, porcelain jewelry, ceramic pendants, ceramic charm necklaces, handmade ceramic pendants
Again, using these keywords in a short description on the category pages will improve the likelihood of a good Google ranking as opposed to having a category page only listing products.
When I say you can copy these tricks, I do mean that you, of course, need to adjust the keywords to work for you. They'll be different if you do illustration, create jewellery, or sell handmade crochet art. If you need free tools and help with finding your keywords, take a look at our free SEO course.
Disclaimer: Following the above two tips will add to your SEO success, but won't be the only things needed for it. SEO is a complex game, albeit not an impossible one!

Creator quote of the week 📌
Character designer and illustrator @VCR-WOLFE got candid here about using tags on their website. As others in the comments confirm, tagging might not be the most fun, but it helps a lot with making your site search-friendly.
See you next week,
Petra
